Richard Dyers theory of star image

  • 'Pop performer' and 'Pop star' are not the same thing.
  • Pop stars have an identity or persona that is not restricted solely to their musicianship.
  • Stars are constructed and in a way, artificial as when they go out on stage to perform they have thought about what to wear.
  • Stars have a USP (Unique Selling Point) which could be copied or adapted.
"A star is an image that is constructed out of a range of materials"

  • Record companies nature and shape their stars to appeal to their audience.
  • Stars present ideology and culture for example, Tom Cruise is interested in scientology and Gwyneth Paltrow promotes healthy eating. This makes their audience become interested in the same thing.
  • The star transformation process turns into a construct which provides audiences with a focus of what you are 'supposed to be like' such as, if you are skinny you are beautiful, e.g Megan Fox and if you are larger you are fun and bubbly such as Adele.
  • Stars adapt and change their personality and persona to keep fans interested, for example, Madonna has changed her appearance over her different albums.
  • Each star has and image motif which is a running theme for that artist/band. This could be reoccurring fonts and icons found throughout their album covers, magazine ads, etc. Such as, Red Hot Chilli Peppers have their red star-like logo and Eminem has his bold and capitalised font.
