We have been researching how to light our dinner scene, this event specifically because for our other scenes we are relying on natural light (or the lack of). However for the dinner scene it is essential that we light not only our background but also illuminate our actors for specific shots.
We are going to put a light behind the actor to highlight the background in the scene, this highlights where the actor is in relationship to the setting and helps the audience understand the setting. This also encourages the over the shoulder shot as it adds depth perception to the shot.
We are going to use the soft light effect, which we were inspired to use by the youtube video 'music video lighting tutorial' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmJ5f9Y23WU) which showed the difference between showing the actors face both with and without the light to make us feel that the soft light would nicely illuminate the actor without blinding them or being too exaggerated.
For example, in the tutorial, the speaker shows us his set with the light on first
And then with the light off
As you can see the first image would be far more appropriate for lighting an actors face than without this additional light.
We will also be attempting to follow the method of the 'three point lighting' effect
- Key Light- Torch (supplied by college)
- Fill Light - House Lights above dinner table
- Back Light - Desk work lamp
